Studio Update!

I've been painting up a storm whenever I have time. This drab blue green color has been driving me mad lately. It's such a boring color...just blah. I didn't want a white wall in this room, so I picked a very light gray. It looks like someone dropped a dollop of black into a gallon of white paint.

I thought about getting rid of the lattice work on the walls, but it might have been more work than I wanted. Everything kind of blends together when it's the same color, so the lattice isn't too bad of a problem. Besides it adds a little visual interest to the room. Once I started getting the gray on the walls, I realized the baseboards need to be a pure, bright white instead of that super-light beige. Let's add that to my to-do list!

Looks like I will be hosting an Open Studio on my 30th birthday. I figured that date would be a fantastic way to celebrate this milestone age. My birthday is on March 10th, and that leaves me with oh, about 30 days until I have to get everything ready for the public. Can I do it? We'll see!

Creative Space Thursday

I've decided to challenge myself this month. I'm going to draw a two-page spread in my sketchbook everyday. Everyday! It doesn't matter what it is, as long as I fill up the space. This will definitely be a challenge because I'm so awful with meeting deadlines. I should probably think of something awesome to do as a reward on March 1st.

The word "BOLD" was used to describe me recently, and I need to remind myself, that yes, I am bold and need to continue being bold. And brave. And determined.

As you can see, the pages are not complete masterpieces. In fact, they're kind of a hot mess. It should be interesting to see how this pans out.

My Latest Obsession: Washi Tape

My latest obsession! I must get more!

Washi tape is simply masking tape in pretty designs and colors.

How will I use Washi Tape? Decorating my sketchbooks, attaching notes to my Etsy sales, and adding a little extra support to envelopes. I'm sure Mazzy could come up with a few things herself!

If I Could Think of Another Title

...besides "NEW ART!", then I suppose I would title this post something else, hah. It's early Monday morning, and I want to share what I worked on for most of Saturday afternoon. It started out as a sketch (Here's the Sunday Sketchbook post) and now it's a full-blown painting!

I used Sharpie markers for the lines, and colored it in with India Ink and Watercolors.

I'm thinking about getting prints of this one soon!

First Look into the Studio

I've painted the work area of my studio a bright teal. I can't even tell you how much I love that color! It's so pretty! Pictures and posters are being placed on the wall and I'm working through my to-do list bit by bit.

Of course, when all of this is going on, I come down with some sort of stomach bug. Looks like life is saying, slow down, spend some time in bed. So I've been sleeping on and off all day. I've been trying to enjoy it, and relax a little but I can't help but think of everything I need to do. Oh well. So it goes!

Making Plans

Last week, Mazzy said she wanted a dry erase board. I wasn't sure what she would use it for. Perhaps she'll just draw on it? Well, I definitely didn't expect a to-do list! While I was putting away laundry this morning, I came across "Mazzy's Plans". How adorable is this? She's watched me make to-do lists for years and years, and she's now making her own.

Video Tour of the New Workspace

Yesterday I made a video tour of the new space. I'm so excited about it! My to-do list is growing everyday, so I'm trying my best to just be patient. A new leak was discovered in the front, you can see a bit of it in the video, so I've got to get the landlord to fix it asap. And then there's lack of funds! I'll be honest: I can be a bit impulsive at times and I usually just jump into things and hope a net arrives eventually. I totally did this with the new space and I have very little money coming in, especially after the holidays.

But! Oh well, everything will be okay in the end. I have no set deadlines with the space and I can have a grand opening this summer, doesn't matter. The good thing is that I'm taking chances and definitely believing in myself. I am not afraid of failing at all. In fact, failing isn't even an option. This will work and it'll be awesome. Just wait and see!

Moving In, Week One

I got the key to my new place on Friday and I've been so excited to start moving my stuff! This morning I shuffled in a few things and quickly realized...I have a LOT of crap! I guess I'll de-clutter while moving in!

I'm packing my stuff in these plastic bins. This moving process will take awhile, and I'm okay with that. There are so many things to do to the studio: paint walls, do repairs, replace some lighting, etc. So I cannot get settled in too quickly. I'm thinking I should be 100 percent in before the springtime.

I love love love these built in shelves under the stairs. This building is huge and old, but I'm only renting maybe 400 square feet of it. The space in front of my area is the Arts Council, where I work every Friday and the space behind is a flower shop. The upstairs is unoccupied.

You can see the flower shop through this window in the wall. My dad came by on Friday and I gave him the grand tour. He's a super handy man jack of all trades, and he was almost more excited than I am. He said it would take no effort at all to tear down this shelf and build another one. I'll put it on the to-do list, dad!

My poor little tree kept getting picked on by my cat, so I brought it up to the studio. This huge window is facing south and it gets a lot of sun. I'm pretty sure Mr. Bonsai tree will enjoy all the extra light.

I'm trying my best to not spend a huge amount of money on new things. New Desk! New Storage Things! New Whatever! I have everything I need and more, so I'll just have to save my money and use it towards quality wall paint and the new shelf. So excited!

Friday Gratitude

Back in 2008, I decided it would be a great idea to make a small list of things I'm thankful for every Friday. It's been a long, long time since I've done a Friday Gratitude post...since 2008, in fact, and I think it's time to bring it back!

I'm thankful for:

A short but sweet visit with my dad. I showed him my studio area and he's just about as excited about it as I am.
Feeling capable and inspired.
My darling daughter and her sensitive ways.
My lovely hubby and our breakfast dates.
And as silly as it sounds, I'm thankful for the mail and the USPS. We live in a very small town so we can't always find what we're looking for. So we end up ordering a lot of stuff online. Pretty soon, we'll know our delivery people on a first name basis!

Creative Space Thursday

I can't show off the entire project, so these snippets will have to do! I'm painting a huge wooden sign for a buddy. I'm being very fussy with the lines and it's causing me to take my sweet time with this project. Thank goodness I've found the WTF podcast to listen to while I paint.

I need to wrap this up soon! I can see the finish line, yay!

Drawings by the Kiddo

As the daughter of an artist, it's a given that my nine year old Mazzy likes to draw. Anything artistic has been encouraged since the day she could hold a crayon. We have several sketchbooks full of her scribbles, drawings, and stories. Lately she's been creating her own comics as well as drawing from her favorite cartoons.

Her comics are almost always half finished, perhaps a bad habit from me, but they're always very creative.

She's been all about Adventure Time lately.

She wanted pizza on this day? My silly girl!

She creates her own stories too. We might scan some of them in and make a video. We'll have to find a microphone for the computer first, so she can record the voices herself.

She has new hardback sketchbook but I couldn't find it this morning. I think she might've taken it to school. I'm hoping to make her art a regular feature on my blog!

The IngenuiTEA teapot from Adagio Teas. My new favorite thing in the morning. I actually ordered another one just so I can have one at home and one at the studio. I might be a little obsessed with tea. Just a little.

Small town livin': I got a call from the librarian yesterday. She said she came across a book full of pin-up girls and thought of me. She wanted to give me first dibs before putting it out on the For Sale table. Of course, I stopped by to snatch it up! It's awesome knowing almost everyone in a small town!

Also: huge packs of different colored Sharpies, gift cards for restaurants and chowin' down, textin' with friends, a new year and new opportunities, cuddlin' with Dexter...

Otherwise known as: What I'm Working On This Wednesday!

I'm going through a bunch of stuff in the house, sort of a pre-spring cleaning and I came across this old shelf. I got it at a thrift store years ago and ended up painting it black. Why? I can't remember. I'm now covering it in Kilz and hoping to transform it into something cute. Hopefully it'll be hung in my new studio. It'll hold my vintage camera collection.

Here's a small peek at a mural I hope to finish soon. I mean, I NEED to finish soon. I started it in October 2011, and because of all the holidays I abandoned it to focus on life events. Thank goodness the owner is understanding! I should finish it soon and I'm hoping to make a progress video of the whole project.

There are a few more things I'm working on, here and there, but didn't take a photo...maybe next time?

Hello 2012!

This week I had an official meeting with the owner of this place. We walked through the space and agreed on a date to get my studio moved in. I feel incredibly grown up and very much like this is the next step in my artistic career.

In two weeks, I will be moving my stuff out of my basement and into a real space to work! It even has a small gallery space in the front! I can't wait!

2012 will be awesome! I don't have an official list of resolutions, or even a to-do list (yet!), but I know for the first month or so, I'll be painting the walls of the new studio and trying to figure out where to put everything.

Oh, the potential for awesomeness!

Peacock Bags Now Available!

Last week, I decided to take a chance and use my Christmas bonus towards something I've been wanting for months now: get my peacock image screenprinted onto a tote. I've tried before to use local businesses but they just fell through for reasons unknown. This time I emailed Night Owls Print Shop in Texas and they responded right away. I can't remember where I found them, perhaps an ad somewhere, but I'm so glad I did.

Looking back at my email it shows that my first message was sent on December 20th. I had 30 bags by December 24th. That's amazingly fast! And a fantastic Christmas present to myself.

It's now available on my Etsy shop. Get one now before they're gone. There's only 30 of them available and I don't think I will be getting any more. (I will, however, think of more images to screenprint onto bags!)

Christmas Presents!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend! I know I did, and I'm definitely ready to get back to work and normal life today. Since all the presents have been handed out, I'm ready to update the blog with photos commissioned presents.

A friend asked if I could paint portraits of Lil' Wayne and Eminem for her son's new room. I had complete freedom on size, color, pose, everything. Here's what I came up with. They're 22" x 28", oil on canvas. I'm quite proud of them.

Another friend had a great idea for his girlfriend. He told me she really wanted a Kool Aid man pitcher, but everything online was crazy expensive or wouldn't arrive in the mail in time. I took on the challenge even though I've never etched anything into glass before but I figured How hard could it be? Well, not too hard at all! Just a little etching cream, some contact paper, and an x-acto knife. Ta-da! We called it Operation Oh Yeah.

The girlfriend must have really enjoyed her present, because she said yes to his marriage proposal. How exciting!

A Look Inside the Studio

When we bought this house a few years ago, we fell in love with the basement and the potential it held. We could have a guest bedroom and a studio AND if we played our cards right, maybe a place for Daniel to have band practice (when a band was formed). Here we are four years later, and my art stuff is overflowing.

I admit, I'm absolutely awful at keeping this area clean.

It's a hot mess, isn't it? I am planning on cleaning it today, but I wanted to show off the area I'm working with. It's maybe 12 feet by 8 feet, so close to 100 square feet of space. There's a closet that stuffed with more supplies, and in another part of the basement there's an 8 foot tall project I'm working on. There's also little piles of paintings here and there. The entire basement is a mad house.

I'm a a point in my artistic journey where I can entertain the idea of maybe renting a space. I've thought about this for the past few months or so. Can I afford it? Can I justify another expense, especially since I don't bring in a LOT of money from my art? Is it going to tank? What if? What if? What if?

One of the positives of having a separate space is the lack of reasons to procrastinate. When I work from home, I have a tendency to look at other things to do, instead of painting. Look I have dishes to wash! Look I have laundry! Look I have to take the dog out! If I don't work from home, I don't worry about home-stuff.

I do have a space in mind, and it's right behind the Arts Council (where I work every Friday) space so it's almost perfect! I've talked to the landlord (who I've known for years) and she's supposed to get back to me soon. It needs a little work but I know several handy men who would work for a six-pack and pizza, and the rent is reasonable, so this is looking good! So, it's a bit of a waiting game now, which is expected since I asked about the space right before the holidays.

Fingers crossed! I'm looking forward to taking my art to the next level in 2012!

Last week, Mazzy mentioned how she would like an ornament of Santa and his reindeer. Daniel and I scoured a nearby Hallmark and all we could find was Rudolph. No problem, Mazzy adores him anyway. She even took him to her Girl Scout meeting to show him off.

Alice Cooper in Atlanta

My husband Daniel is a long, long time Alice Cooper fan but has never seen him live. So when we heard he was coming to Atlanta, it was a no-brainer...we had to get tickets. We were very fortunate to get fifth row seats, on the aisle even, and our view was fantastic. The only drawback was the drunk guy in the middle of the row who had to buy another beer every other song. After the third time he squeezed by us, I told him that the next time he left he better bring me back a beer. I didn't see him after that.

Now, earlier yesterday afternoon, I was reading Ramsey's Tumblr and saw that she posted a video collection of various happenings in her life. I loved the video and the idea and decided I'd like to try it out. My fancy phone can record an insane amount of video, so I recorded bits and pieces of the Alice Cooper concert. I'd like to make another video from my day to day life, an maybe make it a habit. We'll see!

But for now: Alice Cooper!

I can't say I'm the biggest AC fan ever, and I didn't know a song or two, but I went mostly for the experience. I mean, it's Alice Cooper! He's a legend! How often can you tag along and see a rock and roll legend? Alice's set was top-notch, solid, and full of gags and goodies. I'm so glad Daniel and I got the chance to see him live.

After every trip, I usually spend an entire afternoon recharging, drinking lots of hot tea and water, and sitting around in my stretchy pants. Travelling takes a lot out of me, especially when I'm surrounded by people on the plane, at various attractions, and at the airport. People, people everywhere!

I've spent most of my time lately planning out the rest of my week, and getting mentally prepared to knock out a few more projects before the holidays. If all goes well, I'll spend the last two weeks of the year doing nothing but reading on the couch.

Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, and Back!

A few months ago, Ryan Adams announced that he would tour the east coast and I had the brilliant idea to roadtrip to his gig in Baltimore. My BEST FRIEND FOREVER Amber lives in Williamsburg, Virginia, three hours from Baltimore, and I could just meet her at her place, then take off for another state. Amber and I both love Ryan Adams and this is a wonderful reason to get together, especially since we haven't see each other in over a year.

The Baltimore Museum of Art. I was so excited to see so many well known artworks in one place! Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, Picasso, Miro, O'keeffe and more and more!

Here's our darling Ryan Adams. He played an amazing set, just him, two guitars, and a piano. A wonderful end to our fun adventure. I wanted to hang out by the tour bus all night to get a chance to meet my favorite musician but we had to get back on the road so I wouldn't miss my flight.

Visited but not photographed: Atomic Books (my zine lovin' heart was very happy!), Aloha Bar (Made a new bartender friend!), Timbuktu Restaurant (we overheard someone sing "Wing Beneath My Wings"), and various coffee places so I could get a caffeine fix.

Ballerina Hippo

This commissioned painting is long, long overdue. Are all creative types really bad about due dates and keeping track of time? I know I am! This dancing hippo is getting shipped off to Michigan in the morning to be hung on the walls of my baby cousin's room.

It's 2 feet wide and 4 feet tall. Acrylics on canvas and sealed with Polycrylic (Satin Finish).

Start Something That Matters - A Giveaway!

I've been a fan of TOMS shoes for a few years now. Their One for One movement: one pair of shoes for your, another for a child in need, is inspiring and makes me feel all warm inside. I bought my first pair back in April 2009, and as you can see from the photo above, they're looking a little well...loved. I use them as my painting shoes and you can spots little flecks of paint here and there.

When TOMS offered books for bloggers, I jumped on the application. I didn't even think I'd actually be offered a book to review, but lo and behold I was! When I spotted the package on my doorstep, I couldn't wait to start reading.

From the About page on startsomethingthatmatters.com: In Start Something That Matters, Blake Mycoskie tells the story of TOMS, one of the fastest-growing shoe companies in the world, and combines it with lessons learned from such other innovative organizations as method, charity: water, FEED Projects, and TerraCycle.

Start Something That Matters was devoured in about two afternoons. I'm a big fan of other people sharing their stories and this book was full of them. Blake starts out with his own story, then he shares the tales from other people he's met along the way. Everyone starts out with a simple idea, works towards their goals, and succeeds. There's definitely a can-do spirit throughout the book and I was definitely inspired to work harder and smarter with my own personal goals. I can see myself reading this book again.

These past few years I've been fortunate enough to be able to go crazy on the windows of my work. I just come up with a general idea, run it by my bosslady, and get to painting! Here's what I came up with this year:

A "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" theme! We're advertising the Annual Christmas Talent Showcase, Sounds of the Season. (You can click the Flickr link to see it bigger!)

This is how I prepared for this big project: find How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Youtube, print screenshots of my favorite characters, freehand everything with a dry erase marker on the windows, and paint! There you go!

All of the painting took about 5 hours total. It seemed so much longer since it was cold and windy. My eyes we red by the end of the afternoon.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see this whenever I drive by. I've already heard many compliments!

I curated a Feline Foto Show for a local bookstore. We always set up a way for the public to vote for their favorite photo, and I couldn't help myself and used Mr. Happy Cat. So Cute!

I bought my sister some soccer shoes. She adores them.

And in a fit of procrastination, I decided it would be a good idea to wash all the paintbrushes that have been gathering around the sink.

Get Your Paint On - Beyond Basics

I enjoy taking art classes (online or in real life) and I like the challenge of creating new work that I otherwise wouldn't do. The Get Your Paint On -Beyond Basics online class actually requires you to slow down and focus on the very act of painting, which is always a difficulty for me. I like to slap the paint on, then go back and fix the mistakes. This time, I'm still slapping the paint on, but I'm doing it in layers and taking my time. Here are progress shots:

This is a week to get things done, so you'll be seeing a few projects in their final stages. I'm very excited to make this off my to-do list and get it delivered to it's owner. I haven't measured its height, but I'm pretty sure he's about 9 feet tall. He'll be standing in a yard soon, cheering on the Bulldogs and spreading Christmas cheer at the same time!

Camilla's Morran

Morran belongs to Camilla Engman, an artist I've been following for years. Camilla has recently sent out a call for pictures of Morran. There will be a book printed with all the illustrations she has received and the proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit a charity of her choice.

I used watercolors and an india ink pen on 300 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper.

Atlanta Day of the Dead 2011

Mazzy and I attended the Atlanta Day of the Dead celebration yesterday. It was an exceptionally beautiful day and we had a great time. I went crazy over authentic Mexican food (I only get to eat it when I'm around my grandmother) and Mazzy had her first churro.

Inspiration!

I've signed up for Get Your Paint On: Beyond the Basics E-course and I'm totally stoked! Like I need ANOTHER thing on my plate, but hey, it'll be fun! This week we're all talking about inspiration, where to find it and what to do with it.

Yesterday I drove up to Atlanta to see the Picasso to Warhol exhibit at the High Museum of Art. They were offering half off the price of admission because it was Picasso's birthday. I've seen the permanent collections many times, so I knew this trip would be short and sweet and I'd be back in time to get the kiddo from school.

The first thing you see is Picasso's Girl Before a Mirror. Everyone who knows me knows that I am a highly sensitive person and I can cry at the drop of a hat. Well, I have to admit, seeing this amazing Picasso painting brought me to tears. Thank goodness I went alone! The rest of his paintings were equally amazing. Then there was Matisse's Dance (1)! It's huge and magnificent and I'm trying my best not to type in ALL CAPS but seriously...OMG is all I can say. Matisse AND Picasso? Be still, my beating heart!

The rest of the exhibit was just as beautiful and I couldn't believe I was seeing all this art in real life instead of in books and magazines. I made a pact with myself that I would bring Maz to this exhibit soon.

I wanted to buy everything in the gift shop but only had a few bucks. So I added some postcards to my lovely collection. I drove home with my artistic soul filled and a smile on my face. I'm SO READY to get my paint on!

Pumpkin Painting

Last night Maz and I attending a pumpkin carving party. We didn't carve any, but we did buy little pumpkins and paint pens. Here's what we made:

My pumpkin is Dia de los Muertos inspired, and mostly a trial run for another project due this week. Mazzy painted Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf. We decided to keep the wolf orange since we didn't have a grey paint pen.

Little Dancer of Fourteen Years Mural

All in all, I think she took about 8-10 hours. I couldn't work longer than 2 hours at a time because standing on a ladder and painting really took its toll on me.

But she's done and I couldn't be more excited to show her off! My assignment was to take Edgar Degas' Little Dancer of Fourteen Years, make her outfit pink, and paint her on the wall. And here you go, a pretty mural for the local dance studio. She's about 9 feet tall and her dress is about 3 feet wide.

I used acrylic paints mixed with a little Polycrylic to help it stick to the wall. You can't see it in the photo, but the tutu is covered in tiny pink glitter. I used Martha Stewart Living Glitter Specialty Finish and it's beautiful. I also used the metallic finish on the girl's body but thinned it down 50% with Polycrylic.

I'm starting another mural in the dance studio next week. Can't wait to show it off!

I currently have many, many creative balls up in the air and I'm doing my best to juggle them all, as well as take care of the family and the pets (a zoo, I tell ya!). Here's a photo post of what I've been up to:

Friends keep tell me that if I paint more chickens and roosters, then I could definitely sell them faster than other paintings. I call this a "Chicken Challenge", and so I'm busting out several feather friend portraits over the next few weeks to see if my friends' theory is true. It's fun to just sit down and paint something cute and quick.

I'm working on this huge mural while my kiddo (and all the other dance students) are in school. Hopefully I'll get to work on it this weekend...and maybe finish it.

I had some unexpected free time yesterday morning so I painted an avocado. Gotta keep those creative juices flowing!

And here's the finished product of hanging out with my dad on Monday. Now it's up to me to prime and paint it. With all this recent rain, the primer isn't drying as fast as I want it to, so it's a slow process. I have to have lots of patience with this one!

This morning I hung out with my handyman Dad. Thank goodness he could figure out the "plans" I had drawn up without much trouble and he cut out a large shape from plywood. I tell him all the time we should start a business together where he builds stuff and I paint it. It could work, if we lived closer together.

Birthday Party Highlights

I hired a local culinary student to make the Link cake. It was super-adorable and everyone loved it. It was sad when we had to cut it.

We played Pin the Mustache on Mario...which EVERYONE won! I think the kids to see through the ribbon.

I'm a Pokemon Trainer! Thumbs up!

And the hubby was Dr. Mario.

I commissioned The Bunny Cafe on Etsy to make a Link costume for Mazzy. It turned out extremely amazing! The Link Shield was a hit, too!

Cousin John was Solid Snake. We took advantage of this white wall and acted out some Smash Bros. scenes.

All in all, a wonderful, fun, nerdy time!

I've been trying to clean my studio, lately, and it's quite the task. When I say "clean", I really mean, "put things into really neat piles". Here's a small pile of two projects. I need to start on my Sketchbook project, and I need to finish this heart painting.

I painted this heart a few months ago, just to get my hands warmed up for other projects. I always felt like it needed something more, but I wasn't sure what that was. Then someone suggested that I add bandages to it. Awesome! The idea worked!

Dressing Up, Part 2

Link's shield is complete! After a minor setback yesterday, it's finally done. I had lots of fun making it, but I'm very glad to mark this one off my to-do list.

While finishing the backside, a small area of paint stuck to my work surface and pulled off some paint. After pouting for a few minutes, I patched it up. Not before almost accidentally destroying the whole piece. Remember kiddos, spray paint EATS FOAM! Always have a protective layer of primer over your foamcore.

The back is all Duck Tape. That stuff is handy, no doubt!

The gem is a piece of origami paper.

Another Blast from the Past

While visiting my parents yesterday afternoon, I asked my dad if he remembered the little seed bead weavings I did as a little girl. He searched his bedroom for a moment and came out with these two gems.

How cool are those? I can't imagine the amount of patience I had to work with such small thread and beads! As a young child, no less! I'm pretty sure I was about 10 or 11 when I made these, close to the age that my daughter is now. Remember my figures from 1994? Dad says I am not allowed to take these weavings home either. Maybe I can find some of my more vintage artwork stashed away in his house?

Dressing Up

For my daughter's 9th birthday party, we're throwing a video game themed shin-dig where everyone dresses up as a video game character. Mazzy has decided on being Link from the Zelda series. We've got the costume ordered, as well as a sword. The only thing missing is a shield, and I thought I could make it.

It's made out of two sheets of pink foam insulation. I always use this stuff whenever I'm working on props for plays and recitals. It definitely comes in handy!

It was the perfect material to use to make the shield look like it was carved from wood.

The front is almost done! I just need to add a little silver, and paint the triangle gold. I finished the back, but you can't see it in the photo.

I can't wait to show off the finished piece, along with the entire outfit! The birthday party is next Sunday and I hope we'll be ready!

I've been thinking about painting more animals, with simple shapes and colors, perhaps to hang in kids' rooms. And this morning, while brushing my teeth, I had a thought: Dumbo! Elephant! Feather! Funny how ideas just pop into your head while you're doing the most routine of things. So after dropping the kiddo off at school, I headed down to the studio and painted, painted, painted. Since it is painted with oils it'll take a few days to dry. Then I'll paint sides black and attach picture wire to the back. Soon after that it'll be listed on the Etsy shop. I might just do a series of circus animals...hmmmmmmm.

Have I mentioned how I'm an awful procrastinator? Well, I'm sure I have. This project was put off for weeks, even though I had grand intentions of starting and getting everything painted early and that's all I talked about for a few days but, old habits die hard...and I painted a set just days before opening night. Here's some progress shots:

A backdrop for The Jungle Book Kids production opening on Friday. All in all, about 8 hours of painting. I kept the jungle simple and bold since it's a fun and cute play. I can't wait to see it under stage lights!

Visions of Old Glory, Summer 2011

I'm very fortunate to be able to participate in local art exhibits. This summer marks the second time I've been asked to participate in "Visions of Old Glory", a photography exhibit featuring the American Flag. Photographers are asked to submit one photo of an American flag to display and the photo above is my submission (last year's photo is here).

The story of the making of this photo is interesting...if not stressful. Of course, being the procrastinator that I am I waited until the Monday before the drop-off date to actually take the photo. I had the idea weeks ago, and really, I wanted Daniel's hands in there too, but with his work schedule and my procrastination, it didn't work out. So I just used Maz as my muse and went from there.

With my BBF's camera, I took this photo (as well as many, many others), uploaded it to MPIX.com and ordered a large print and 2-day shipping. When the print arrived, I called my framing guy in a panic and asked if he could frame it almost overnight. When he agreed I said, "Man, you are just enabling me to procrastinate!" Thankfully, everything worked out so I could drop off the photo in time.

This photo is now on display at A Novel Experience in Zebulon, Georgia. It's in the back, above the fireplace.

What have I learned? a. Well, I should not procrastinate so much, because not everything's going to work out like they did this time. b. Also, I totally need to get my own DSLR for Christmas! c. And my babygirl is a wonderful muse!

Meet Flapjack

My husband found this wee kitten on the side of the road on his way to work one afternoon. He brought him home and I named him "Pancake" because that's what he would've become if no one saved him from traffic. Later that evening Maz said he should be named "Flapjack" and that name won. Flapjack is an unexpected addition to our little family. I've always wanted a cat but since Daniel's allergic, I've just given up on that dream. But here comes along Flapjack, and since we cannot find another home for him, it looks like we're keeping him. He's extremely curious and loud and smelly but I think we're going to enjoy his company. Daniel's allergies haven't really kicked in, so everything's looking good.

Oh man, where does the time go? Summer vacation is officially over for me and I've been trying my best to get back into the mood to work for at least a week. I spent two days on the Georgia coast, then headed to Michigan to spend a week with family. I returned to work the day after getting home so I've barely had any time to rest and relax my mind. This travel stuff is rough! But I won't complain too much, I'm so fortunate to be able to visit my family as often as I can. Even more fortunate to fly, which takes about 14 hours off one-way travel time.

Last night I made myself paint something, just anything, to get my hands dirty. So here you go, a wee little sock monkey. I had fun playing with textures and staying up late making sure everything looked good. It feels great to get back to work, and I'm hoping to knock a few more paintings out over the next few days.

The days before leaving for an adventure are often hectic: there are many loose ends to tie up, and a house to clean (love coming home to a clean house!), and many things to pack. I have a week or two before I leave, but I'm taking this time to slow down. There's no sense in starting another huge painting or project. It'll still be there when I get back. Right now I just want to have a cup of tea, read a couple of books, and perhaps doodle in my sketchbook whenever I get an idea. That's all.

Six Years on Etsy! Congratulations!

June 19th was my six Etsy-versary! My my, how time flies! Just six years ago I attended the first I.C.E event in Atlanta, heard about a little site called Etsy and decided to sign up. Turns out, I was the first person to register a shop, how cool is that?

Now that six years have passed, I can tell you a few things I have learned:

Just because you built it, doesn't mean they'll come. Etsy is now bigger and better and it's hard to stand out in a sea of artsy, crafty goodness. Just because you have a shop, doesn't mean you're going to sell everything you post.
Show me what you're working with. Make sure to have good, if not GREAT, photos of your items. I recently borrowed a DSLR from a friend and re-shot photos of ALL my items. Now everything looks so much cleaner and better than before. If you cannot get your hands on a fancy camera, use what you've got and make the most of it. Research different lighting techniques, or better yet, go out in your front yard and use natural light.
Make art because you love it, not because you want to get rich. I don't know about you, but I can tell when someone's doing something JUST to make money. There's no passion in the art and only dollar signs in their eyes. It's a huge turn-off. If you want to make money, get a regular 9 to 5 job. You'll get it quicker.
Do Work Son! Now that you've set up your shop, tell everyone about it! Network! Network! Network! Use Facebook and Twitter to your advantage. Send your shop link to all your friends, neighbors, relatives, etc. Then keep making stuff!
There is no secret. Really, there isn't. All the things I've listed above can be applied to almost any sort of freelance gig. The more work you put into it, the more you'll get out of it. Etsy is the same way!

I don't make a living off my Etsy sales, and I am okay with that. But I have noticed that when I have the time to put into my online shop, the more sales I make. In fact, there was one ENTIRE year where I didn't make a single sale. That year, I decided to go to college full time, so I definitely didn't have the time to make & sell art. This year, in between working at the arts council, learning to tattoo, painting sets for plays, and taking care of the family, I still have very little time to dedicate myself to my own artwork. But I'm slowly working on scheduling more time to make art, and one day I hope to make enough from my Etsy shop to pay for a studio somewhere in town. It's good to have goals, right?

Sunday's Adventure

Sundays are usually a lazy, bum around the house kind of day but we've been itching to go out and have an adventure as a family. We've been talking about walking around old cemeteries in Macon and taking pictures, but with the temperatures in the mid-nineties almost daily, that option didn't seem too attractive.

So we decided, almost spur-of-the-moment, to go to Fernbank Museum of Natural History. The Mythic Creatures exhibit has been on my to-do list for sometime, and I also had a little bit of extra cash for the week, so why not? Let's go!

We let Maz have control of the camera for most of the time. She took this photo of me and Daniel soon after we arrived at Fernbank.

Then she posed as a mermaid. Awwww!

And my favorite! A Pegasus!

We spent most of our time exploring all the exhibits and didn't take many more pictures. Mazzy definitely had a blast in the NatureQuest exhibit, and we almost couldn't get her out without promising a trip to the Gift Shop. Since I was having a bit of a spending spree, I treated Maz to a Dinosaur Skeleton Excavation and Assembly Kit and I bought myself a new bracelet. Look!

That's one adventure crossed off my Summer To-Do List! What will we think of next?

I'm Not a Photographer, But I Play One on TV

Well, I do consider myself a photographer, in the artistic sense of the word. Now a professional photographer, I am most definitely not. I don't think I'm good (or patient) enough to photograph headshots, weddings, and other things/events that professional photographers are hired for. But I will take photos of you if you're a relative or friend, and you ask nicely.

Tomorrow evening I'm accepting the challenge of "Maternity Photography" and it should be fun. I'm quite confident in my skills, and sister-in-law (due any day now!) will be very pleasant to photograph. This evening Maz and I practiced shooting on Aperture Priority mode in the backyard during the pretty, early evening light.

Look at that sweet smile! I love shooting photos with a wide open aperture so you get that blurry background. I do believe using my Pentax k1000 has helped me learn the ins and outs of photography, especially with f-stop numbers!

We practiced the heart/hand over the belly button shot that I'm sure we'll do tomorrow. You can see Mazzy's appendectomy scar from her surgery two years ago.

Then she got goofy. Today was a lazy-stay-in-pjs-all-day kind of day so that's why she's in Batman pants and unbrushed hair.

Tomorrow should go well, that is, if the sister-in-law doesn't go into labor overnight!

On My Desk Wednesday

Early Afternoon.

Later in the evening.

When I'm in between projects, I like to copy artwork that I really enjoy. This helps keep my hands busy and perhaps in the process I learn something new. What did I learn yesterday? Well, I learned that inexpensive watercolor paper just doesn't do it for me, but I'm trying hard to use up this stash so I've just got to suck it up and paint on.

To end this post on a positive note: I'm so excited it's June! It's summertime and I don't have to wake up at 6:30 a.m. for at least two months and there are road/plane trips to take soon and art to make and commissions to work on and and and...just so excited!

The First Saturday of the Summer

Today's our first day of Summer! Sure, the official start to the season is later in June, but in Georgia the summer heat is already too hot to handle. The kiddo celebrated her last day of Third Grade yesterday and today she celebrated becoming a Junior Girl Scout. We're definitely looking forward to some downtime this weekend.

The start of a new season/time/adventure always gets me in the mood to make a list. The other night Maz and I created our Summer To-Do List. Here's what we want to do with our extra time:

Vacation on the Beach.
Swimming lessons for Maz.
Art Camp for Maz.
Michigan trip for me.
Pet Hamster for Maz.
As much time by a pool as possible for the both of us.
Dance Camp for Maz.
Kung Fu Panda 2 for the whole family.
And much more!

Maz and I are also having a reading challenge starting on June 1st. We're going to see who can read the most books in two months. Mazzy's sure she's going to win!

Summer Reading Program Preparations

Just like last year, I was asked to help decorate the local library by painting the windows. It's been awhile since I've painted on glass, and I've definitely forgotten how hard it is to do! The paint is very temperamental, and you just can't treat it like a regular painting on canvas.

Here's some of the clipart I used as inspiration. This year's theme is "One World, Many Stories".

And here's the final product. I have another window to paint around the corner next week. I'll probably add more textures to the elephant while I have the paint out.

I'm almost relieved that there won't be any facepainting at this year's kick-off party for the Summer Reading Program. Last year's facepainting marathon almost wrecked me!

I'm in between large projects and I'm feeling antsy. These past few weeks I've had deadline after deadline, and now that everything's done, I just don't know what to do with myself. While I was cleaning up the studio the other day, I came across my collection of vintage cameras. I thought, hmm, it'll be nice to paint one. And so I did.

This painting is 12" x 9", acrylic on artists panel. Lots of texture, just the way I like it!

It's been awhile since I've done this, so it's time for another installment of...
Foto Friday: Where I upload all the recent pictures from my phone and share them with you!

My new favorite coffee mug! Hyperbole and a Half is one of my most favorite blogs, and once I heard there was a Responsibility Champion mug, I just had to have it! Of course, the hubs says I shouldn't use it around the kiddo. That wouldn't be responsible, right?

I recently took a weekend trip to Michigan to quickly (too quickly!) pay a visit to relatives that I haven't seen in months. I always make sure to be slightly hungry when I visit my grandmother because she's sure to offer food to me. This time she asked if I wanted tamales (handmade! The old fashioned way!) and I politely said, yes, please, that would be great. But inside I was all, OMG YES TAMALES!

I visited my uncle in the hospital in Ann Arbor. This painting was in one of the many, many hallways and I thought it was amazing. I also took a picture of the nameplate, so I could remember who the artist was.

The view from my uncle's hospital room. I pretty much fell in love with Ann Arbor and I hope to visit again, under better circumstances. You can't see it in the picture, but there are several games of Ultimate Frisbee going on. I found it very strange to be in the north where it still looked like winter. Here in the south, it's already hot and humid.

Here's a sketch I sent to a client for approval. I'll be painting an elephant ballerina soon! I'll be sure to update the blog about it.

Making Cupcakes

For Mother's Day, Mazzy made a list of reasons why she loved me. It was so sweet and of course, I teared up while reading it. My favorite reason: You make the best cupcakes.

So we had to make more cupcakes. This time we added food coloring and layered different colors. This technique razzle-dazzled Maz, and she couldn't wait to eat one.

I'm working on props for a dance recital this weekend. I know, I know, this weekend is less than three days away but I have faith I can get this done in time. I always do!

Some of my supplies. I'm so messy when I'm working on these projects.

When we first moved into this house, we were in love with the basement. It was large and open and I could picture myself having a nice studio. Fast forward a few years and the basement is slowly filling up with various items: a computer desk, a treadmill, tons of laundry, etc. I'm finding myself wishing for a wide open studio, some place I can hang my work and sell, have open houses, and have enough room to maneuver when I'm working on these large projects (the letters are over 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide). Perhaps I can make it a goal to find an affordable studio space by the time I'm 30? I think so.

It can be a shared studio space! My husband occasionally paints and you can see some of his work in the background of the letter photo. He works on large scale, and I'm sure he'd appreciate a bigger space.

During a conversation today, a friend suggested that I paint more roosters, since people love roosters and will buy paintings of them, especially in the South. It's been on my art to-do list for awhile, and since I have the awful habit of procrastinating, I decided to put off another project just to paint a rooster. I also decided to record the process.

I had originally uploaded another song to the video, but my husband suggested another. When he played The Cramp's Chicken, I knew it was the best song for my video! Many thanks to the hubby and his music collection.

My BFF Amber is letting me borrow her DSLR for a few weeks and I'm slowly trying to figure out how this thing works. I can take photos with a SLR that uses 35mm film, no problem, but tack on a computer screen and tons of buttons, I just have no clue what to do. Here's to learning new things!

This morning, my only model available was darling Dexter. I shot many many photos but these were the best looking ones. I thought it would be best to just borrow a DSLR for awhile before dropping several hundred dollars on one, especially if I couldn't figure out how to use it. But I do have to give it time, I'm sure I had a hard time learning the ins and outs of my Pentax K1000.

Be prepared for many more photos of my dog!

Nunsense is Habit Forming!

Big Projects, Back to Back

The month of April has flown by, and I haven't had the energy to update at all! Here's what I've been up to:

Painting a big red barn for the background of my work's Annual Talent Showcase. This year's theme was "The Grand Ole Opry" and I'm sad that I didn't get a chance to see my barn in action. The kiddo came down with strep throat the night of the performance, so we stayed home.

Here's a photo for context. The background is at least 20 feet wide and 11 feet tall. My thighs we burning for days after all the ladder climbing/moving. Oh man. I'm hoping to track down photos from the performance so I can show off the finished piece. It's already back in storage, so I can't take my own photos.

Next up, the background for my work's next play, Nunsense. We did Nunsense two years ago and we're bringing it back for an encore performance.

I painted the set last time, remember? I changed up the design a little, but all in all, an easy project. I'm finishing up all the props on Wednesday, fingers crossed. The curtains open on Friday!

Diana+ Camera

I finally got some old 120 film developed! Last summer, during my yearly Michigan trip, I scooted off on my own to explore and see things I've never seen before. I drove three hours to the very tip of lower Michigan to see and drive across Mackinac Bridge. I have a slight fear of very large bridges, but it didn't stop me from this lovely adventure! I picked the prettiest day, too!

Storm's A-Brewin'

I was recently commissioned to paint a background to be used during the local Easter Egg Hunt. Folks will be able to take photos of their children while they pose with the Easter Bunny in front of this 5' x 8' painting. I'm pretty excited to see this in action!

The first photo was to show how large this project is. This second photo shows more of the detail. I thought it would be neat to attach fabric flowers to the tree branches and grass to give the painting more depth. Now, I just have to locate the flowers.

I've been quiet lately, planning various projects and what-not. I can't believe that I've got projects through November! I'm loving it!

Also, those of you in the South, stay safe! These storms are crazy!

New Painting, Hurrah!

Sometimes, we have a bit of downtime at the shop. One afternoon we were goofing off and talking about the most rediculous free tattoo we could come up with. It started out as just a dolphin with a unicorn horn. The idea grew from there and next thing we know we've got a Uni-phin with a fanny pack and a tribal armband, a rainbow, and the words "Ride 'til You Die!" Of course, I had to try to paint it!

And so I did:

I didn't get any progress shots of this painting, probably because it didn't take too long. Now I just need to find a good frame for it and hang it at the shop.

Here's a photo of what I use:

A Winsor & Newton travel watercolor set, Bombay India Ink, Winsor & Newton Artists' Watercolor brushes. I'm a big fan of Kilimanjaro's 300lb. cold pressed watercolor paper.

I picked up these supplies from various art stores: Hobby Lobby, Micheal's, Dick Blick, and Cheap Joe's Art Supplies. (Cheap Joe's is the only place where I can find the superthick watercolor paper that I love.)
